Misterioso: Music of Valentin Silvestrov
Friday, November 8, 2002 @ 8:00pm Guest artist: Rachel Matthews, piano/ celeste Gentle, nostalgic and sometimes unsettling, the work of contemporary Ukrainian composer and ECM recording artist Valentin Silvestrov, evokes postludes and farewells. We perform a variety of works written between 1960 and 2000, highlighting the composer’s unique diversity and depth. Surprising instrumental combinations, Misterioso (clarinetist playing both clarinet and piano), and Trio (flute/ piccolo, trumpet and celeste) brush with the avant- garde. More traditional pairings in the three Postludes reveal, over time, Silvestrov’s melancholic lyricism and metaphorical vocabulary.
